Air pollution isn’t just an environmental problem – it’s a serious public health issue. Every breath we take can contain invisible pollutants that penetrate deep into our lungs, affecting our breathing and increasing the risk of chronic and acute conditions.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 7 million premature deaths each year are linked to exposure to air pollutants – a number that places air pollution among the most sneaky “killers” of the modern world.
What air pollution includes
Air pollution consists of various suspended particles and gases such as:
- PM2.5 & PM10 particles (coming from burning fossil fuels, cement, etc.)
- Nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
- Ground-level ozone (O3)
- Carbon monoxide (CO)
- Sulfate and nitrate salts
PM 2.5 particles (with a diameter smaller than 2.5 micrometers) are considered particularly dangerous, as they can penetrate deep into the lungs and may even enter the bloodstream.
What are the consequences on respiratory health?
Inhaling these pollutants can cause or make worse:
- Asthma and respiratory allergies
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Bronchitis and pneumonia
- Lung Cancer
- Reduced lung function in kids and teens
- Increased sensitivity to viral and bacterial infections.
A long-term study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (Dockery et al., 1993) showed that people living in areas with high air pollution have a 26% higher risk of death from respiratory causes.
Another study from Lancet Planetary Health (2018) showed that every increase of 10 μg/m³ in PM2.5 is linked to a 6-9% increase in mortality from respiratory diseases.
Who are the most vulnerable?
The effects of pollution are more pronounced in the following groups:
- Kids: Developing lungs, more breaths per minute.
- Elderly: Most common underlying conditions
- Chronic illnesses: Asthma, COPD, heart diseases
- Outdoor workers
- Residents of densely populated or industrial areas
Especially in children, studies from the Children’s Health Study (University of Southern California) showed that chronic exposure to PM2.5 is linked to delayed lung function development, which can have consequences in adulthood.
What we can do to protect ourselves:
Although individual action has limited ability to change air quality, we can reduce our personal exposure and protect the vulnerable:
- We check daily on the air quality index (AQI)
- We avoid outdoor activities on days with high pollution.
- We use air purifiers in indoor spaces (especially for kids or people with asthma).
- We close windows and avoid using the air conditioner when there's heavy pollution outside.
- We wear high-protection masks (e.g., FFP2/FFP3) when exposure is unavoidable.
- We are training in first aid for respiratory incidents.

- It allows the timely recognition of critical symptoms (shortness of breath, wheezing, loss of consciousness),
