We are just one step away from the schools closing for the summer holidays. The overall atmosphere is generally relaxed, as it comes to an end.

Both kindergartens and elementary schools tend to have increasing needs compared to secondary schools. In these cases, teachers are required to be especially careful, since they are responsible for the supervision and protection of younger children. Below are a few simple tips that, when followed to the letter, make playground time even more fun and minimize risks!

We've said it before and we'll say it again. Prevention is considered one of the most important actions, if not the most important, when it comes to health issues. Similarly, in this case, teachers have the ability to prevent potential risks and act in time when they supervise and watch over students carefully while they enjoy their play during recess. At the same time, right from the start of the school year, teachers should be aware of any chronic health issues that a student might have, so that if it ever becomes necessary, they are aware of how to handle the situation.

There are two precautionary actions, though, that should be ranked high on the priorities of those in charge. These are:

1) Knowing how to give First Aid

and

2) Getting a First Aid kit and being able to check if it’s complete.

According to the Ministry of Education's guidelines, every school's first aid kits should include: sterile pads/gauze of various sizes, individually wrapped paraffin pads, individually wrapped elastic/roll and triangular bandages, adhesive wound dressings, adhesive tape/band-aids, antiseptic sprays for cleaning wounds, scissors, tweezers, safety pins, gloves and disposable bags, ice packs, sterile eye wash, sugar packets (in case of a diabetic person), and a thermometer.

We must emphasize that the boxes should be kept in specially designated areas so that they are easily accessible when needed. Regularly, necessary checks should also be carried out to ensure that these boxes are fully stocked and ready to go.

Regarding proper training for immediate care and intervention in minor injuries, school staff should make sure they get the necessary knowledge that will allow them to feel ready and confident when unexpected incidents happen.
